Changing more than the Seasons

Two years ago I  watched my son Brandon being led away from the courtroom in handcuffs.  And these were the thoughts I had as he walked away.

This was another milestone in my life, one that every mother dreads.   Having no chance to put my arms around him, bless him, and pray to The Mother to protect him, I simply sighed.  This was my baby; my only natural-born son; flesh of my flesh — and I could do nothing but simply watch him walk away, ready to embark on a perilous journey of his own through the Pennsylvania state penal system.  Like so many other African-American men, B would be spending the next two to four years locked behind bars — another victim of theU.S.  prison industrial system.

Praying for his well-being and safety, I made a vow that I would do something for the men and women who find themselves in this predicament.  More often when people have served their time and when released to go back into society they come home to a different world. How can I serve these people and  how best can I serve my son? As Earth Mother for Peace it is my duty to do something.  I will pray on it, and seek guidance from my sister-friends.

Today, Brandon is in CSI Bootcamp, waiting for his release in October this year.  I still pray for him everyday. But soon I will see him walking out of Bootcamp a free man.

Toni, I am so happy you found Spirituality Without Borders, and now I have found you. I look forward to sharing and learning from you. My Mennonite pastor does interplay and I am profoundly moved by her spontaneous and passionate expression. Happy New Year.
